One of the most frequently asked questions I get about LinkedIn is, “do I need a Premium account?”
It’s a bit like when you start a new sport, such as snow Skiing – you don’t go out and get the latest “carvers” when you are just starting to navigate your way around the beginner slopes. You learn on beginner ski’s and work your way up to the more advanced set.
It’s no different with lead generation on LinkedIn.
I believe that if you are looking to engage with more customers are on LinkedIn, you should get the strategy right first before upgrading – the upgrade will simply supercharge your results.

It is clear that it is going to become more and more important to have a Premium account as LinkedIn continues to evolve – the trend is well underway.
One of the biggest bonuses of having a Premium account is the additional search features as shown below. Narrowing down the search results for Function, Interested In, Seniority Level, Groups etc, you can get very targeted with your search results and engage with relevancy. When it comes to lead generation on LinkedIn, relevancy is of paramount importance.
Here are the 3 main areas that a Premium account offers additional features:
Who’s Viewed Your Profile: Get a more complete picture of who is looking at your profile when you upgrade.
Full Profiles: Get access to entire profiles beyond just the name and headline of 3rd degree profiles.
Full Name Visibility: When you get 3rd degree profiles, you will usually just see the first name and last initial.
InMail Messages: InMails allow you to message individuals who you may not want to connect directly with yet.
Introductions: We believe there is tremendous opportunity in your network waiting to be uncovered.
Open Profile: Whenever you see this symbol on a profile, it means that individual has an open profile. They are likely accepting messages from individuals they are not connected to yet (similar to InMail) and they are showing their full profile to anyone on LinkedIn – see screenshot below.

Target your ideal prospect
Whether you’re selling, job-hunting, recruiting, or building your business, you’ve likely got an ideal target in mind. Premium filters let you focus on reaching exactly who you need to find, whether they be experience executives, people who work at SMBs, or any other specific segment.
Find common ground
Try joining LinkedIn groups that are relevant to your target market. Then, you can use the “Group” search filter to find people who are members of those groups – and tailor your message accordingly.
Customising your connection requests or LinkedIn messages will see you get a 50% higher response rate. Scan through the person’s profile to reference any people or experiences you share in common, and be specific about why you’re interested in them.
